Review

Papete is a complete percussionist from Brazilian northeast state Maranhão. He brings to this album recorded for the label specialized in cultural preservation Marcus Pereira the essence of his region's folklore, melted with the urban influences to which he is exposed since long, as he's been living in São Paulo for 30 years. With band accompaniment, he displays his virtuosity in all percussion instruments, revealing the soul of Maranhão, with its native drums, its native dances, such as the Bumba-meu-boi, the tantãs, the tambor de crioula, the cantigas das minas, as well as the desafios (cutting contests) and forrós from Ceará, a neighboring state whose culture is shared by Maranhão. Singing or playing, always improvising, Papete documents a strong and lively culture through his sheer virtuosity in a instigating release where the climax is provided by an energetic berimbau solo. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
