Berliner illustrirte Zeitung (BIZ), founded in 1891 by Heppner & Co. and sold to Ullstein in 1894. It was originally illustrated with engravings, then photographs. Under Kurt Korff as editor-in-chief (1905-33) the BIZ became very influential as a showcase for a new brand of photojournalism embedded in modern page layouts. Between 1924 and 1933 it was the leading German illustrated weekly in terms of circulation (1930: 1, 844, 130), number of pages, and advertising. It became the Berliner illustrierte Zeitung in 1941, and last appeared on 29 April 1945.
