Stern, Bert (b. 1929), self-taught American photographer who in the 1960s epitomized the photographer as media star. His career began with Look magazine, where he was an assistant art director 1946-8, but he later rapidly made a reputation in advertising. In the 1960s he ran a large factory-style studio in New York, specializing in fashion, advertising, and celebrity portraits. Stern's ‘last sitting’ photographs of Marilyn Monroe, taken six weeks before her death, are among his best-known images.
