Bertram Ross

Ross, Bertram (b Brooklyn, NY, 13 Nov. 1920, d 20 Apr. 2003). US dancer and teacher. He entered art school but then left to study dance with Graham, joining her company in 1953. A tall, passionate, ‘granite visaged’ performer, he created leading roles in many of her works including Seraphic Dialogue (1955), Clytemnestra (1958), Acrobats of God (1960), Phaedra (1962), A Time of Snow (1968), and The Archaic Hours (1969). He taught at the Graham School for many years and presented his first evening of choreography in 1965. He left Graham in 1974, after which he continued teaching and choreographing, as well as taking up a singing career.
