Argentré, Bertrand d' (1519-90), achieved prominence in two fields: he was the outstanding Breton jurist of his day, renowned for his Commentaires de la Coutume de Bretagne (1568) and for the revision of this Custom (1580). Secondly, he had a lifelong interest in Breton history, which culminated in his authoritative and officially commissioned Histoire de Bretagne (1582, revised 1588, and again in 1618 by his son, Claude).
