Bertrand de Bar-sur-aube

French Literature Companion: Bertrand de Bar-sur-aube

Trouvère of the late 12th c. and known author of two chansons de geste: Aimeri de Narbonne and Girard de Vienne. In the latter he gives a famous definition of the three cycles of French epic poetry, le Roi, Doon de Mayence (‘Revolt’), and Garin de Monglane or Guillaume. In fact his work tends to blend features of all three.

[Philip Bennett]
