Bertrand Goldberg
(1913–97)
German-born American architect. He attended the Bauhaus in the 1930s, and emigrated to Chicago, IL, in 1934. He designed prefabricated housing and industrial buildings for the Government. He was responsible for the Marina City Towers, Chicago (1959–64), with concrete shell construction, earning them the nickname of the ‘Corn-Cobs’. He used similar forms in the Raymond Hilliard Housing (1964–6) and the Prentice Women's Hospital (1970–5). Part of his River City, Chicago (1976–87), was realized.
