Review
It's easy to make fun of the bubblegum genre, but the ingredients that went into making these songs work required an incredible balancing act, one that insisted on a kind of buoyant, innocent simplicity in which all leering had to be implied rather than actually present, but when the balance was struck, well, just try not singing along to the chorus of "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" when it comes on your car radio. The genius behind the Ohio Express (and similar groups like the 1910 Fruitgum Company) was essentially producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, who for a brief time in the late '60s filled the airwaves with this stuff. This very brief collection has most of the Express essentials (it lacks at least one of the hits, the "Yummy" clone "Chewy, Chewy"), including "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" (featuring singer Joey Levine) and the country-tinged "Sausalito," which spotlighted the singing of Graham Gouldman (and the playing of the group that went on to become 10cc), along with eight other songs of pure confection. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music GuideTracks
