SoundPoker Says: The betting levels in tournaments usually start out small. After a specific time interval or after a certain number of players have been eliminated from the tournament, the betting level is increased. Eventually the betting level may include a general ante for all of the remaining players. Progressive betting levels entice players to be more active and play more hands because of pressure applied to players with a short stack, who need to act because before their chip pile is completely diminished by the forced bets.
