Betting Round

Poker Guide: Betting Round

The opportunity for an active player in a poker hand to check, bet, raise, re-raise, re-raise again (depending on the betting structure), or fold. Each betting round start's with the first person left of the dealer button and finishes with the person who holds the dealer button.

SoundPoker Says: In no limit games the sky is the limit for each betting round. Two players could virtually raise and re-raise each other until all of their chips are in the pot. A player may choose to push all of their chips in pre-flop. This could mean only one round of betting!

Since the betting structure is pre-determined in limit hold'em (by each table in a casino) there is the possibility of more bets per round. In most limit games the range of betting usually varies from three to five bets (achieving this will make the betting "capped").

Hypothetically speaking, let's say you are playing a 10-20 limit hold'em game. The small blind would be $5 and the big blind would be $10. This 10-20 limit hold'em with a maximum of three (keep in mind at some casino's it can be as much as five) bets(raises) before the turn.

Pre-flop:
Player A raises the big blind and makes it to $20 to play. Player B re-raises and makes it "two bets". The bet is now $30 to play. Player C raises again making it "three bets", as a result the betting would be "capped" at $40. All other players fold and the big blind calls the three bets and puts in another $30 (including their original post of $10) making a total of $40. Players A and B can only call player C's $40 bet at this point. Player A would have to put in $20 and player B would have to put in $10 more, therefore the Big Blind, Player A, B, and C have all put in $40.

After the flop:
Each of the players could bet the exact same way as they did pre-flop (as a result each of them putting in $40)!

After the Turn and after the river:
Since this is a $10-$20 game all bets will now be at increments of $20.

If this was a heads up $10-$20 game, the players could raise and reraise each other until all of their chips were in the pot!
