Bezaleel

Bible Guide: Bezalel, Bezaleel

("in God's shadow/protection")

(cf Ps 91:1).

1. A Judahite, son of Uri son of Hur. Bezalel was the skilled artisan selected to be in charge of executing all the work of the tabernacle (Ex 31:2) and its vessels, including the ark, the priestly garments, the anointing oil and incense. The Bible relates that he was filled with the divine Spirit in wisdom and in all manner of skilled artistry in working metals, stone and wood. He was assisted by Aholiab son of Ahisamach, the Danite. Bezalel also executed the brass altar which, up until the time of David, stood before the Tent of Meeting at the great high-place in Gibeon, and upon which Solomon offered his sacrifices (I Kgs chap. 3).

2. One of the eight sons of Pahath-Moab. He repudiated his alien wife at the behest of Ezra (Ezra 10:30).
