Buddhism Dictionary:

Bhaiṣajya-guru

The Medicine Buddha, a figure especially venerated in Tibet, China, and Japan. Bhaiṣajya-guru is a Buddha in the Mahāyāna who epitomizes the power of healing, both on a physical and a spiritual level. He is the subject of the Bhaiṣajya-guru Sūtra, where he is described as being dark blue in colour and holding a jar of medicinal nectar. By virtue of the twelve vows he made prior to becoming a Buddha, beings are guaranteed healing through devotional acts dedicated to him.
