Big Kahuna Reef

Games: Big Kahuna Reef

Game Description

Big Kahuna Reef is a tropical-themed puzzle game where the object is to eliminate wooden crates from beneath the ocean’s depths. Each puzzle screen is filled with rows of shells, starfish, and other marine objects arranged in different patterns. Those that appear on top of crates are removed by chaining three or more of the same object types. This is accomplished by clicking on one object so it swaps position with an adjacent object. When three or more appear in the same row or column, the items will disappear from the screen and new objects will fall down and take their place. After all crates on a particular level have been removed, play begins on a new, more challenging level. In between stages, players can watch 3D fish swim back and forth amidst a choice of reef backgrounds.

One of the game’s secondary goals is to unlock all 22 fish types, each of which can be placed in the ocean as scenery. Players will automatically unlock fish by completing all 150 puzzles in the game, but the action doesn’t stop there. Big Kahuna Reef also includes a level editor, an option to download additional levels, and a choice of two multiplayer games: competitive and cooperative. The former is a race to clear crates, while the latter involves teaming up to complete stages. Multiplayer games use the developer’s "mouse party" technology, which supports multiple mice on the same computer. Aquarium fans looking to show off their clownfish, angelfish, and other creatures can do so by setting the game’s various reef backgrounds as a screensaver.

Big Kahuna Reef is a puzzle game that was created by Reflexive Entertainment. Released in 2004 on the PC, it became the first of a series of Big Kahuna titles. The look of the game is that of ocean scenes, exotic fish and tiki heads. It is a match making casual game that involves breaking boxes in order to progress past each level. To beat a level you must break all the boxes by making chains of objects (such as starfish or shells). Between levels, points are earned that unlock new fish and other under sea creatures. During the interludes between levels, one can create and observe their personal reef and its creatures. Reflexive also created a sequel called Big Kahuna Reef 2 in addition to a title called Big Kahuna Words in which the game play mechanic is similar to the other two title, but instead of busting boxes with chains of similar objects, one must make words (akin to the game Boggle).

One unique thing about the Big Kahuna Reef series is that there are 1000s of additional free user made levels created by people from around the world (similar to the Ricochet Infinity series).[1]
