Big Show! -- Hawaii ni Utaeba

Plot

Kazuyuki Izutsu follows up on his Nodo Jiman -- a film about a real-life Star Search style TV show -- with this sequel centering on Nodo's main character, fading enka singer Reiko Akagi (Shigeru Muroi). Rebounding from her success on television, Reiko manages to snag a gig to sing legend Harumi Miyako's "Osaka Shigure" before a pro-wrestling show in Hawaii. The crowd, it turns out, was not in the mood to listen to the lilting melancholy of enka and the whole endeavor proves less than successful. That night, she runs into Tashiro (Yoshio Harada), the vice president of the agency managing Harumi Miyako. He tells her that Miyako's backup singers couldn't make it to Hawaii and asks if she could to fill in. Reiko is more than a little reluctant about this seeming stroke of good luck; a decade previous she worked for the diva only to make a catastrophic flub that haunts her to this day. Her qualms prove to be justified -- she chokes on stage. Just as she's thinking about hanging up her microphone, she meets and is suddenly proposed to by a well-scrubbed second generation Japanese-American lad named Jimmy (Nao Omori), whose family runs a large taro farm. Does Reiko quit or does she cling to her fading dreams of stardom? ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
