What is biofuel energy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Bio energy is one of the cheapest and most readily available energy sources. It can be applied in a variety of uses. For example, bio gas can be produced by keeping wet cow dung in anaerobic conditions. The bio gas (methane) so produced, is a very good fuel which burns to give only carbon dioxide and water. Other fuels, like oil and coal, release toxic gases like sulphur dioxide. Methane gas can be burned to cook food or create steam to rotate turbines to generate electricity.

Does biofuel contribute to global warming?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, biomass burns grown vegetation to produce energy. Because the vegetation grew recently, it means it took carbon out of the atmosphere recently. Burning it puts the same carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. This makes it carbon neutral.

Can tractors be made to use biodiesel?

There are several species that have different advantages over others. Selection of the
"best" species could be decided by fastest replicating, most biomass produced in the smallest amount of time, the easiest to grow, the most lipids produced, etc. The U.S. government has taken a particular interest in Botryococcus braunii because it secretes triacylglycerides (fats).

Why is ethanol from sugar cane called biofuel but ethanol from ethene not?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Ethanol from sugarcane is known as a biofuel because the ethanol is derived from a biological, renewable source. Burning this releases recently absorbed carbon dioxide so it is part of the carbon cycle.

Ethanol from ethene (or ethylene) is typically produced from fossil fuels, namely petroleum, so it is a non-renewable resource. Burning this releases carbon dioxide that was absorbed millions of years ago, so it is all extra. Burning fossil fuels is causing global warming.
