Plot

Mata Nui, the Great Spirit of the Matoran universe on Aqua Magna, has been exiled from his home by his "brother", the evil Makuta Teridax. Teridax took over his gigantic robot body and placed Mata Nui's spirit inside the legendary Mask of Life. Teridax then banishes the mask into orbit in order to prevent Mata Nui from interfering with his takeover of the Matoran Universe.

The mask crash lands on a planet called Bara Magna, a remote, decaying desert wasteland. A Scarabax Beetle sees the mask create a body for Mata Nui and he picks up the Scarabax, who touches his mask. Upon doing so, the beetle changed into a living weapon. Just then, a being called a Vorox attacks Mata Nui, and flees with its stinger fallen off. Mata Nui picks up the stinger just as a villager named Metus shows up. The Agori then takes Mata Nui to Vulcanus as he tells him of the new way they settle disputes: sending warriors called Glatorian to fight in an Arena. Metus introduces Mata Nui to Raanu, the Agori leader of Vulcanus. Mata Nui’s actions in a battle earn him the respect of Ackar, a Glatorian.

Metus sees this and tries to hire Mata Nui, who refused. Ackar then, introduces Mata Nui to Kiina, a feisty female Glatorian from the village of Tajun. In exchange for showing the two Glatorians a secret cavern underneath Tajun, Kiina wished to leave Bara Magna with Mata Nui. In Tajun, they find the village had already fallen at the hands of the Skrall army combined with Bone Hunters. A Glatorian, Gresh, was found to be badly injured. Kiina takes them to the hidden cavern where they meet Berix, a scavenger(who is often acussed as thief, though this is not true). While Berix tends to Gresh, the other three discovered a hidden chamber containing a picture of the robot that was once Mata Nui's body. The four Glatorian then tell the crowd of Agori that they must unite their villages against the threat of the Bone Hunter-Skrall alliance, and the villages then agree. Later, Kiina follows a mysterious figure, turning out to be Berix, who is captured along with Kiina by the Bone Hunters and an Agori traitor. Back in Tesara, Raanu and Metus alert the Glatorian to Kiina and Berix's kidnapping. Mata Nui then sets off for the Skrall camp on his own.

Kiina and Berix were held a suspended cage near the mouth of a cave. Mata Nui confronts Tuma, the Skrall leader and challenges him to a one-on-one fight, and eventually defeats him. As he claims Tuma's shield in victory and freed Kiina and Berix, the traitor, now revealed to be Metus, appeared. He explains how he got the nomads and the Skrall to unite under him. Now in control of the army, he ordered the Skrall and Bone Hunters to kill off the three. Just then the Skrall and Bone Hunters were attacked by an immense being composed of Scarabax Beetles. A squadron of Agori and Glatorian arrived, and together, they fought back vigorously. Mata Nui sees Metus fleeing in his vehicle and pursued him. Metus fails to escape, and Mata Nui turns him into a bionic snake with the Mask of Life. He then slithers away. Mata Nui and the Glatorians then defeat the army.

As the Glatorian watched the combined efforts of the Agori as they pulled their villages together, the Glatorian and Berix notice that the completed villages formed the shape of a large robotic body, similar to the one that Mata Nui's spirit once inhabited. To further this, Berix pulls out a coin with the Unity-Duty-Destiny symbol, the Aqua Magna symbol, and the Mask of Life symbol on one side, and the Skrall symbol on the other. Berix also pulls out a Skrall shield and, realizing it is the same symbol, Mata Nui deduces that it is a map. With this information in hand, Mata Nui and the Glatorians prepare to go their next adventure.

Trivia

  • Unlike the previous three Bionicle films, The Legend Reborn was distributed by Tinseltown Toons instead of Miramax Films.
  • The island of Mata Nui as seen in the film is non-canon; in the storyline, it had become a barren wasteland due to the Bohrok swarms' activity (in fact, this was needed for the Mata Nui robot to stand upwards).[1]
  • The movie's intro features the Mask of Life flying out of an entire galaxy from Aqua Magna to Bara Magna. In Bionicle canon, the former is simply a moon of the latter, and would actually take much less time than the opening credits appear to depict. According to Greg Farshtey, the author of the Bionicle comics, this is because of a change in canon shortly before the film's release.
  • The Bone Hunters' helmets, glowing swords, grey bodies and hands were actually traits from Atakus, a Rock Tribe Agori.
