Wikipedia:

Biopace

Biopace is a tradename of a type of ovoid bicycle chain ring that was intended to help overcome the "dead zone" where the crank arms are vertical and riders have little mechanical advantage.

Production of them was stopped after a short time, probably due to reports of knee injuries, possibly caused by misuse of the product when trying to force traditional pedaling techniques which the design was supposed to negate (make un-necessary). [citation needed] The elliptical shape causes the rider to pedal harder in the horizontal and faster in the vertical to maintain a constant speed. This often results in knee pain resulting in Biopace chainrings going out of fashion.

As a result, within the bicycle industry the term "biopace" has come to mean any new product introduced claiming to revolutionize a certain aspect of cycling, yet on closer inspection is poorly made and does not perform as advertised.[citation needed]
