Birds of Eden is an aviary and bird sanctuary in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The aviary covers an area of 21,761 square metres (234,230 sq ft) with a total volume of 375,372 cubic metres (13,256,100 cu ft)[1].

Around 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) of walkways provide access for visitors. [2]

The sanctuary is home to around 3000 birds from over 200 different species.

Construction

Masts and mesh

The enclosure consists of 3.2 hectares (32,000 m2) of wire mesh resting on cables strung between 28 masts. The masts vary in length between 2 and 34 meters and at its highest point the mesh is 50 metres (160 ft) above the ground. The total weight of the wire mesh is around 80 tonnes.[1][3]
