History
The station was built by the Wirral Railway in 1888, replacing their earlier terminus at Wallasey Bridge Road (a short distance away) which had opened in 1866. It was originally known as Birkenhead Docks. The Wirral Railway subsequently became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, who electrified the line through Birkenhead North in 1938, allowing through services to Liverpool via the Mersey Railway Tunnel.
Services
Trains operate every 15 minutes (Monday to Saturday daytime) to New Brighton and West Kirby and every 5–10 minutes via Hamilton Square to Liverpool. At other times, trains run every 30 minutes to New Brighton and West Kirby, and every 15 minutes to Liverpool.
Problems
Steps connect the Liverpool platform with the ticket office and New Brighton/West Kirby platform. However, this means that unfoldable buggies and wheelchairs can not get to Liverpool when boarding at Birkenhead North. They have to get a train to Bidston and then get a train in the opposite direction to Liverpool, or travel to Birkenhead Park themselves.
