Water works like magic in the Magic City. The Birmingham Water Works Board distributes water in and around the city of Birmingham, Alabama. The company serves more than 600,000 customers in a five-county area. It draws water from surface sources in the Black Warrior and Cahaba river basins and maintains a system of some 3,900 miles of transmission lines. Birmingham Water Works also runs two sewage treatment facilities, but most of the wastewater service in the company's territory is provided by other companies. Founded in 1951, Birmingham Water Works is an independent agency run by a board appointed by the Birmingham city government.
