Bite Your Tongue

Idioms: bite one's tongue

Refrain from speaking out, as in A new grandmother must learn to bite her tongue so as not to give unwanted advice, or I'm sure it'll rain during graduation.--Bite your tongue! This term alludes to holding the tongue between the teeth in an effort not to say something one might regret. Shakespeare used it in 2 Henry VI (1:1): "So York must sit and fret and bite his tongue." Today it is sometimes used as a humorous imperative, as in the second example, with the implication that speaking might bring bad luck. [Late 1500s] Also see hold one's tongue.

Album information

The album was recorded over two years during 2005 and 2006, excluding "The Mirror" which was originally released in 2004 as a b-side to Wood's debut solo single on Warner Music, "What R U Waiting 4". All songs on the album are co-written by Wood, excluding the Divinyls cover of "I Touch Myself". The record takes an uptempo pop rock approach, covering a number of themes such as relationships ("Spin the Bottle", "I Told You", "Ain't Dun Nothing To U"), falling asleep behind the wheel ("Wake Up"), body image ("The Mirror") and the entertainment industry ("Devil in Your Soul", "Free Your Mind"). The imagery for the booklet and artwork was inspired by Wood's love for the 1940s burlesque look.

Herald Sun music reporter Cameron Adams gave the album three stars, stating, "Wood hasn't got the budget for hot overseas hitmakers, but has a powerful voice and never sounds out of depth amid heavy guitars...In a word: sassy".[1]

July 18, 2005 "Devil in Your Soul"
The first single from Bite Your Tongue was released on 18 July 2005, and was the very first music release to be lifted from Wood's own independent record label, Mudhoney Records. The song showcased a harder, fast-paced rock sound compared to Wood's previous output, dominated by electric guitars and a strong drum beat. The tongue-in-cheek lyrics take a stab at the music industry and how major record labels take advantage of young artists in order to make them 'marketable'. Wood co-directed the music video. The single debuted at number 13 on the Association of Independent Records (AIR) chart.
