Bitlis is a province of eastern Turkey, located to the west of Lake Van. Ethnic Kurds form the majority of the population.[1] The provincial capital is the town of Bitlis.

Bitlis was formed as an administrative district in the 17th Century.[citation needed] The administrative center was the town of Bitlis, which was called Baghesh.[citation needed]
