Black Star, American agency founded in 1936 by three refuges from the Berlin publishing industry, Kurt Safranski, Ernest Mayer, and Kurt Kornfeld. It established a close relationship with the newly founded Life magazine, offering editors access to European photojournalism, and émigré photographers work and contacts in the USA. It survived the late 20th-century crisis of photojournalism, partly by pursuing corporate work, and continues to flourish. Photographers associated with it have included W. Eugene Smith, Roman Vishniac, Kosti Ruohamaa, Flip Schulke (b. 1930), Rune Hassner, and James Nachtwey.
