Academic Recognition

Blacksburg High School has been nationally recognized for its academic excellence. This status is based partially upon how many Blacksburg High School students elect to take the Advanced Placement Exams.

Athletics and Extracurriculars

Blacksburg High School is a member of the Virginia High School League and competes in the AA River Ridge District, a district in Region IV of Group AA. Blacksburg formerly competed in the Group AA Blue Ridge District, which it had joined when the AA New River Valley District dissolved.

Blacksburg has historically been one of the most successful schools in Group AA (and pre-1970 Group IB) with state championships in men's SOCCER!, football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, and men's golf. Blacksburg has also captured the Wachovia Cup, the VHSL's award for overall excellence in athletics.

In 2002 the men's swim team placed 2nd in the state after being disqualified for a false start in the mens 400 yead freestyle relay. The call was made by a referee who's kid attended Hidden Valley High school, the team that coincidentally won the meet by a margin of only a few points. Hidden Valley cheated in this championship and Blacksburg should have an additional State Championship on the wall in the gym which is currently missing due to unsportsman like conduct on the part of an over zealous parent.

The quiz bowl, debate and forensics teams have also won VHSL state championships.

Forensics and Debate

Blacksburg High School is one of the state's premier schools for forensics and debate. From 1988 to 2003, under Coach Karen Finch, the school won 15 consecutive Group AA state titles in forensics and debate, "the longest unbroken chain of championships in VHSL history". The school sends students to national level competition annually, and has had several national champions, specifically in the extemporaneous speaking category. Dennis Price won the National Championship in Prose Interpretation in 1994. Members of the debate team are commonly refered to as master-debaters by students at the school.

MACC

The math and all-around teams finished 1st for the season in the eastern division. The science and social studies teams finished 2nd for the season, and the English team finished 4th.

The math team finished 2nd in the tournament, and because they were the season winners, they will participate in Super MACC (tournament) on March 26, 2007. The science team finished 1st in the tournament, making them also eligible to participate in Super MACC. The all-around team will also go to the Super MACC (tournament) because they finished first in the season.

The 2007 MACC season was officially over on March 26, 2007 after the Super MACC (tournament). The Blacksburg Math and Science MACC teams took the gold trophy home with very close matches. The all-around team finished second in the tournament.

The students that participate in the MACC competition typically have no socail life and spend their free time studying usless information that will never help them in their future. The sad truth of the program is that these students are wasting thier time.

Science

Blacksburg High School is also know for academic excellence. Suzanne Dana, a Chemistry teacher, recently won the Teacher of the Year award. She attended a conference and was presented with a plaque and a school-wide intercom announcement from none other than the, Michale D. Hurst.
