Biography

While Atlanta hip-hop was slowly coming down from years of hard crunk music, Decatur, GA's Blak Jak came along and had a huge hit in the summer of 2006 with the slowly creeping "Ride & Swerve." Produced by Shawty Redd, the man responsible for much of Young Jeezy's smash Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 album, and featuring special guest Project Pat, "Ride & Swerve" was a laid-back throwback that was originally released independently before the major label Universal picked it up and offered Blak Jak a record deal. A mixtape with DJ Smallz titled Roll da Dice held the rapper's place as he worked on his first album through the summer and fall. His proper debut, Place Your Bets, arrived at the end of 2006 just as his club track "Bobbin My Head" began to catch fire. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Biography

Blak Jak grew up in Decatur, Georgia, and learned about hip-hop from his cousins, who had formed a group called the Ward Boys.[1] In 2006, he released his first album independently, which included production by Shawty Redd (who had previously won recognition producing for Young Jeezy); the first single from the album, "Ride & Swerve", featured guest rapper Project Pat and became an underground hit in the Southern US.[2][3] Blak Jak continued to win fans after he released a mixtape with DJ Smallz, Roll da Dice, in the summer of 2006.[2] On the strength of the single, Universal Records offered Blak Jak a record deal, and the independent album was re-released in October of 2006 under the title Place Your Bets. The single "Bobbin' My Head" scored radio airplay toward the end of 2006,[4] as did his collaboration with T-Pain, "Ball Out ($500)", in March 2007.[5] In the summer of 2007, Los Angeles Dodger infielder Tony Abreu began using "Bobbin' My Head" as his entrance music.[6]
