Biography

Despite the fact that AFI singer Davey Havok and guitarist Jade Puget had been working on songs for their electronic side project Blaqk Audio since before AFI's breakthrough album, Sing the Sorrow, came out in 2003, it took a few years for the music to see the light of day. The success of their group's major-label debut prevented the two from spending much time on it, though Puget still continued to bring programmed sounds into AFI's repertoire, both on Sing the Sorrow and 2006's Decemberunderground. Finally, in early 2007, Havoc (on vocals) and Puget (on everything else) were able to complete what they began, releasing the all-electronic dance and goth-inspired CexCells on Interscope in August of that same year. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

History

Origins

AFI have increasingly included synthesized elements into their recent albums; 2003 release Sing the Sorrow and 2006 release Decemberunderground credit Puget with 'programming and keyboards'.[2][3] These synthesized elements are particularly apparent on songs such as "Death of Seasons" and "37mm". In the August 2006 edition of Guitar World, Puget states that AFI songs "37mm" and "Love Like Winter" were both originally intended as part of the Blaqk Audio side project.[4] Elements of programming, however, can be found as early as 2000's The Art of Drowning, which featured a drum machine on "The Despair Factor".[5]

In January 2007, Havok and Puget entered the studio to record several songs that formed CexCells, their first album.[6] Puget kept fans apprised with updates through his blog, before the Blaqk Audio MySpace[1] was created in February 2007 (he announced on July 27 that they had finished filming the video for their debut single "Stiff Kittens", which has yet to be seen). Since then, both members of Blaqk Audio have posted several updates on their MySpace blog.[7]

Present

On January 12, 2008, Puget uploaded a new song to the Blaqk Audio MySpace entitled "The Ligature".

"I posted a new piece I did called the Ligature. I took a loop of Davey's vocals, chopped and processed them, and then created a kind of breakbeat track with it. An example of me nerding out with my computer. Enjoy!"

Instrumental versions of the Blaqk Audio songs, "Between Breaths" and "The Love Letter" were used in trailers, and on the official website for the 2008 film The Eye. In response to the buzz it created, Puget suggested at a possible public release of all the CexCells songs in instrumental form.

Puget did a remix for the band Tokio Hotel of their song "Ready, Set, Go!", the remix is called "Ready, Set, Go! (AFI/Blaqk Audio Remix)" and it can be found on the CD Scream America!. Blaqk Audio recently contributed a cover of "No New Tale to Tell" to the tribute album for Love and Rockets, New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets.

Puget admitted to writing more music for Blaqk Audio during the recording of AFI's Crash Love, estimating he's written about 70 songs.[8] While promoting AFI's new single "Medicate" on KROQ, Havok said that Blaqk Audio's second album was already completed, but are focused on AFI as they feel "if all of a sudden we're doing two Blaqk Audio records in a row people will think AFI is not happening or something."[8] Puget has also revealed the name of the upcoming album is Bright Black Heaven.[8]
