Biography

Bloodlined Calligraphy is that comparative rarity, a thrashy metalcore band with a female lead singer doing the usual Cookie Monster vocals instead of a burly, deep-voiced dude. Bloodlined Calligraphy is fundamentally an extension of an earlier metalcore act, Friction. Formed in Ypsilanti, MI, in 1998, Friction had been developing a following, but regular lineup changes disrupted their momentum. Faced with rebuilding the group after another mass exodus in early 2002, bassist Eric Cargile and drummer Matt Carter brought in new guitarist Ryan Hampton with the original intent of forming a new lineup of Friction, but by the time new singer Matthew Fleming had joined the band, they had already changed their name to the more unique Bloodlined Calligraphy, a name that also emphasized the members' Christian beliefs. Signing to the CCM indie Selah Records, the group released their debut album, Say Hi to the Bad Guy, in the fall of 2002. With Fleming unable to tour, he left the band amicably and was replaced by female singer Ally French; second guitarist Shawn Williams also joined at this point. Signing with the larger alternative Christian indie Facedown Records in 2003, Bloodlined Calligraphy released the 2004 EP The Beginning of the End prior to their breakthrough with 2005's They Want You Silent. Following the release of Bloodlined Calligraphy's third album, Ypsilanti, in the fall of 2006, Carter chose to leave the band due to family commitments, tapping new drummer Robbie Coran to take his place. On the other end of the thoughtfulness scale, French reportedly quit the band via text message the night before a six-week tour, which the band completed with the help of temporary singers. A new permanent lead singer, Ellen Hoffman, was announced in November 2006. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

History

Bloodlined Calligraphy, a hardcore/metal band was born out of the ashes of the highly influential Ypsilanti, Michigan band Friction, who had dominated the local scene from 1999 to the early 2000s. Friction had seen many members in its time, however bassist Eric Cargile and drummer Matt Carter were the constants of the foundation. Guitarist Ryan Hampton joined Friction after resigning as drummer of a local band, Nobody's Heroes. After recording Say Hi To the Bad Guy for Selah Records with original vocalist Matthew Fleming, touring schedule conflicts forced them to recruit Ally French to replace Fleming. Shortly after French joined the band, they were signed to California's Facedown Records. Around this time, original guitarist Joshua Colvin quit. Detroit-based guitarist Jay Bowden was with the group and recorded the first demo for Facedown records and the Beginning of the End EP. Shawn Williams joined shortly after the first record with French. BLC's Facedown debut, They Want You Silent, was met with acclaim in 2005. Their second full-length LP, aptly titled Ypsilanti, was released in September 2006.

In the fall of 2006, vocalist Ally French left the band to live with her husband, and drummer Matt Carter left the band to attend to family issues. They were replaced by Ellen Hoffman filling in on vocals and Robbie Coran on drums. After one tour Coran left the band. Hampton took over on drums temporarily until April 2007, when Chris Norman was recruited. Not long after, Shawn Williams left the band to work full time. In December 2007, just before recording, Facedown decided to back out of the contract due to a budget conflict. Almost directly after that, Hoffman left the band and moved home. BLC continued practicing and writing new material with no vocalist for a few months. Nina Cislaghi was then asked to join. In the fall of 2008, Chris Norman left the band to pursue a new project. Josh Badura was then asked to officially take his place.

After Nina Cislaghi and Josh Badura joined on vocals and drums, respectively, the band has returned to playing shows and begun writing new material for a 2009 release. For some reason they feel the need to have only female vocalists which limits the talent at that part of the band. Oh, well.
