Review
A DJ mix like this has really only one purpose: to give a know-it-all DJ a chance to show off his depth of hipness. Luckily for the reggae-loving listener, DJ Shortkut both knows the Trojan label's catalog inside-out and has great taste in classic roots reggae and early dancehall. As his labelmate Madlib did before him with 2002's Blunted in the Bomb Shelter, DJ Shortkut has taken several dozen hit singles, dub versions and album tracks from the Trojan vaults (which are now controlled by the Sanctuary group, the company that also owns the Antidote label) and lined them up in a continuous mix, many represented by snippets lasting only a minute or two. If this treatment leaves you hungering for more from each artist, then so much the better -- in the meantime, there's lots of fun to be had in hearing Augustus Pablo's dubwise "Big Rip-Off" segueing with beat-matched perfection into Scotty's "Draw Your Brakes," and Dennis Alcapone's "Funky Tang" leading straight into Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Soul Almighty." There are some worthy obscurities here as well, such as George McKay's derivative but effective "Money Money" and Poppa Tollo's fine "Nuff Stylee." An excellent fusion of modern turntablist technique and old-school reggae grooves. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuideTracks
