Artist: Bob Nastanovich
  • Genres: Rock
  • Instrument: Percussion, Drums, Synthesizer

Biography

Bob Nastanovich was nearly as essential a leader as Stephen Malkmus to the overall persona of the seminal indie rock band Pavement. His role can best be described as "utility man," although he sometimes served as second drummer or added bizarre keyboard accents. Primarily, however, he was a force of nature, adding the strange rants, harmonies, and musical accents that helped characterize the uncanny sound of Pavement. (He was also known for carrying on curious on-stage dialogues with drummer Steve West.) Reportedly, Nastanovich's live vocal stylings inspired the "whoo-hoo" chorus in Blur's memorable 1997 hit "Song 2."

Nastanovich was born in Rochester, NY, in 1967 and raised in Richmond, VA, where he met future Pavement drummer Steve West in high school. In the mid-'80s, he attended the University of Virginia, where he befriended Stephen Malkmus. It wasn't until well after the two graduated from college in the early '90s that Malkmus brought Nastanovich into Pavement, a group he had formed back home in Stockton, CA, with childhood friend Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs). The group came to an end when Malkmus released his debut solo album in 2001. In the latter days of the band, Nastanovich, a horse racing enthusiast, moved to Louisville, KY, where he owns several thoroughbreds. Nastanovich has also performed with the Silver Jews, Pale Horse Riders, and Ectoslavia. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide

Bob Nastanovich (born August 27, 1967 in Rochester, New York) is a former member of the 1990s indie bands Pavement, Ectoslavia, and Pale Horse Riders. In this decade, he has played percussion for Silver Jews.

Biography

Meeting Pavement's leading man Stephen Malkmus and future Silver Jews leader David Berman at the University of Virginia, the three subsequently moved to Jersey City, NJ, living and working together at various jobs in art galleries (as security guards) and Nastanovich was a bus driver/bus terminal manager in New York City and Hoboken. It was during this period that Malkmus re-united with long time friend Scott Kannberg to create the first (then unofficial) Pavement album Slanted and Enchanted in drummer Gary Young's makeshift home studio. It is during this time also that the seeds for the future Silver Jews (Nastanovich, Malkmus and Berman) were planted.

Nastanovich, upon his introduction to the band in 1990, performed many functions in the band, namely adding backing vocals, percussion, harmonica, and effects based keyboard. Initially, his key role was that of assistant time keeper, effectively focusing the efforts of the distracted and eccentric Young.[citation needed] Nastanovich was Pavement's representative in the dismissal of his friend Young (he had been the best man at his wedding).[citation needed] Nastanovich remained a member of the band after Young left, although Steve West became the new drummer.

Nastanovich sang lead vocals on live performances of the songs 'Debris Slide' and 'Conduit for Sale.' He was known for his stage presence and his trademark scream. His role on stage, along with the scream, is said to have influenced the Blur hit Song 2.

Nastanovich is an avid fan of thoroughbred horse racing, both owning, breeding and managing many horses in his current home of Des Moines, Iowa. He served as jockey agent for Greta Kuntzweiler and Joe Johnson. Nastanovich married Whitney Grey Courtney on February 21, 2009.[citation needed]

Bob also played drums on several Silver Jews albums (recently contributing to the Tanglewood Numbers record and tour), has tour managed Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and he managed the first Silver Jews U.S tour of 2006. In addition, he has played on recordings by Palace Brothers and Tall Dwarfs. He is currently employed as a chart caller for Equibase, America's official Horse Racing database, and works at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa and Hawthorne Racecourse in 'Chicagoland'.
