This amiable little b-movie offers a good example of drive-in thrills, 1970's-style. Vernon Zimmerman's script mines 'outlaw myth' ideas from Bonnie And Clyde and old westerns, combining them with the very 1970's genre of the road movie and healthy lashings of skin and violence to please the b-movie audience it was made for. The end result has an amoral tone that might displease some viewers but it is colorful and has the occasional humorous touch, like an in-joke involving a deputy named Abel Gance. Mark L. Lester's direction is efficient and stylish: he uses some lovely New Mexico locations to an atmospheric effect and stages several exciting shoot-out setpieces. The film also benefits from a confident, naturalistic lead performance by Marjoe Gortner as the "outlaw" of the title, who veers from easygoing charm to sudden brutality with disarming ease. Lynda Carter has less to do as his lady love but she fulfills the film's eye-candy requirements nicely and creates a character that is the polar opposite of her more famous role on the Wonder Woman t.v. show. The lead duo gets nice support from a skilled b-movie support cast: Belinda Balaski is charming as Carter's ditzy but goodhearted best friend, Jesse Vint offsets Gortner nicely as a freewheeling partner in crime and Gerrit Graham raises a few laughs as a commune-dwelling hippie. The end result doesn't chart new territory or rate as a serious exploration of the criminal lifestyle -- but it is good, fast-paced fun for a Saturday night. As a result, Bobbie Jo And The Outlaw is worth a look to fans of vintage drive-in fare. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
