Biography

Bobby Caldwell began his professional musical career playing with a group called Noah's Ark. They released two singles in 1967. He next joined up with Johnny Winter in his band. Next Caldwell was off to join Captain Beyond and he recorded with them on their self-titled debut. However, after the tour for that release, Caldwell left the group. He next played on Rick Derringer's All American Boy album, the two having played together previously in Winter's organization. He rejoined Captain Beyond after that recording session, touring for the Sufficiently Breathless album, although he does not appear on that album. When Captain Beyond broke up, he hooked back up with Derringer and Winter in Winter's band. He next joined a new group called Armageddon, but numerous tragedies caused that group to break up after only one album. At this point, Captain Beyond had found their way back together and Caldwell was working with them on their 1977 album, Dawn Explosion. They again fell apart, but Caldwell and bandmate Lee Dorman toured together again in 1979 both under the name of Captain Beyond and Iron Butterfly. Caldwell has also played with the Allman Brothers and is working with the reunion of Captain Beyond. ~ Gary Hill, All Music Guide

Bobby Caldwell is a drummer, songwriter, producer and arranger who co-founded rock cult bands Captain Beyond (with Rod Evans) and Armageddon (with Keith Relf) during the first part of the 1970s. Prior to these projects he played in some of Johnny Winter's seminal albums like Live Johnny Winter And and also on Saints and Sinners. Bobby was also the drummer on Rick Derringer's All American Boy which produced the classic-rock radio staple Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo.

In the 1960s he was member of The New Englanders and Noah's Ark.

He is still active and living in Florida. In 2000, a reformed, but new lineup ofCaptain Beyond created some new demo songs. CB included original guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt who also played with Iron Butterfly on their Metamorphosis album.[1] Bobby has one daughter, Ashley Caldwell Kincheloe.
