Geography

Bohemia is located in New York at 40°46′12″N 73°6′50″W / 40.77°N 73.11389°W / 40.77; -73.11389 (40.770042, -73.113760)[1][page needed].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.8 square miles (22.7 km²), of which, 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.34%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2][page needed] of 2000, there were 9,871 people, 3,326 households, and 2,554 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,131.3 per square mile (436.6/km²). There were 3,387 housing units at an average density of 388.2/sq mi (149.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.61% White, 0.86% African American, 0.05% Native American, 2.38% Asian, 0.83% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.41% of the population.

There were 3,326 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 18.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $65,308, and the median income for a family was $73,218. Males had a median income of $46,449 versus $34,403 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,942. About 3.2% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.8% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.

History

Bohemia, Long Island was founded in 1855. It was named Bohemia because it was settled by Slavic immigrants from a mountainous village near Kadaň in the Central European Kingdom of Bohemia. An important contribution they made to the development of Long Island was adding their rich Central European folklore to the local culture.

Connetquot High School

Connetquot High School (CHS) is a public high school serving students from the communities of Bohemia, West Sayville, Oakdale, and Ronkonkoma in the ninth through twelfth grades located in Bohemia, New York and is part of the Connetquot Central School District.

Junior State of America

Founded in 2009, Connetquot Junior State of America (JSA), a club dedicated to raising political awareness,[3] has a membership of over 260. JSA explores the inner workings of American Politics through mock debates and trials. In addition to attending regional conferences, JSA has created a Connetquot JSA Outreach Program to increase the activism of chapters across Long Island. This club offers multiple community service programs as well as leadership by appointment. It has approximately 60 officers. (Pending Board Approval) [4] The current leadership is as follows:
