Biography

Pumping out bass-heavy dance beats laced with unlikely samples and paired with goofy but salacious raps, Bonde do Rolê are one of the first acts on Brazil's funk carioca (or baile funk) scene to gain an international audience. Consisting of lead MC Marina Ribatski, MC and producer Pedro D'eyrot, and DJ and producer Rodrigo Gorky, Bonde do Rolê offer up a willfully warped variation on funk carioca, merging their beats with odd but obvious samples from the likes of Alice in Chains and Tone-Loc while Ribatski delivers bizarre rhymes about kinky sex and partying of all sorts; as D'eyrot puts it, "The joke is to be as stupid and cheesy as you can be." Bonde do Rolê had earned a sizable fan following at home when they attracted the attention of American DJ and producer Diplo, who heard them during a visit to Brazil. Diplo fell for the group's wild music and frantic stage show, and signed them to his Mad Decent record label in the U.S., while the respected British label Domino struck a deal with the group for Europe. After blowing many minds during their performances on a brief American tour in the spring of 2007, Bonde do Rolê prepared to release their first album with Diplo, With Lasers, in the summer of 2007. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Bonde do Rolê is a Funk Carioca group from Curitiba, Brazil consisting of MCs Pedro D'Eyrot, Laura Taylor, Ana Bernardino, and DJ/MC Rodrigo Gorky. The group started in their hometown Curitiba in the south of Brazil, mixing sexual riffs (ranging from Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" to Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box", but not restricted to these) with funk carioca (sometimes known as baile funk or Brazilian funk). The trio did their first major tour in 2006, with Cansei de Ser Sexy.

International producer Diplo first found out about the band through their MySpace account, and pushed them using his own fledgling label, Mad Decent, before Bonde was signed to Domino in 2006. "We just started making music out of fun—we didn't have any intentions to work professionally with music," said Rodrigo Gorky.

In march 2006, Rolling Stone magazine picked the band as one of the "10 Bands to Watch", where they were described as "Brazilian party starters". The following month The New York Times praised the band's work as well.

Bonde has been used in various media after being signed to the British label Domino Records: Solta o Frango (which literally means: "release the chicken", a Brazilian slang meaning to enjoy and go crazy) is currently heard in a worldwide campaign for the cellphone company Nokia, the track was also used in another commercial for the hit series Ugly Betty on Channel 4 in the UK, it is also featured on the soundtrack of Electronic Arts game Fifa 2008 and on 2008's movie The Ruins. GQ magazine used their song "Office Boy" for the behind-the-scenes photo shoot of actress Jessica Alba by photographer Terry Richardson.

Other songs by Bonde do Rolê include Bondallica (a homage to metalheads which includes references to Slipknot, Manowar, and Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson), Quero Te Amar, and Melô do Tabaco (released only as a 12" single). Their first album, With Lasers, is currently available through iTunes, Napster, eMusic and on vinyl and CD.

Their song "Gasolina" is featured on an Australian advertisement for Bonds underwear. The lyrics used in the commercial caused some offense to Portuguese speakers in Australia, causing the ad to be recut with an instrumental version of the song.[1]

In December 2007, Bonde Do Role cancelled gigs in Dublin, Ireland, the UK and their Australian tour amidst speculation that the band were experiencing internal difficulties and were on the verge of a lineup change.[2] On December 12, Gorky and Pedro announced on a MySpace bulletin that Marina had left the band.

In February 2008, the two remaining members of the band, in search of a new singer, launched a contest in association with MTV Brazil, strongly influenced by shows like American Idol and Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, with Ana Bernardino and Laura Taylor succeeding to be new members of the group.[3]

In 2008, the band toured around the world to make up for all the cancelled dates in the past, including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2008, We Love Sounds festival in Australia and others.

Also in 2008, the band was nominated in two categories (band of the year and song of the year) at the Brazilian MTV video music awards, and performed a medley live at the show.

At the moment, the band has their own interview television show on MTV Brazil and is currently working on their second album with a variety of producers, including DJ Chernobyl (who also worked on their first record), Diplo, Switch, Boys Noize among others.
