Frontispiece and title page of Matthias Klostermayr book (1722).
A frontispiece is a decorative illustration facing a book's title page. In modern use, the frontispiece is the verso opposite the recto title page. Elaborate engraved title pages were in frequent use, especially in Bibles and in scholarly books, and many are masterpieces of engraving. (Use meaning the title page itself is obsolete according to the Oxford English Dictionary.)
