Boolaroo is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 19 kilometres (12 mi) west of Newcastle's central business district. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area.
It was at the epicenter of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake. Despite its relative obscurity, Boolaroo borders onto a number of well known towns and suburbs within the Lake Macquarie Region, including Warners Bay, Speers Point and Toronto, and, for a small strip of land, fronts onto Lake Macquarie itself.
Within Boolaroo, is Cockle Creek railway station, New South Wales, a small station on the Newcastle and Central Coast railway line, New South Wales. Also, Boolaroo previously housed a lead/zinc smelter, owned by the former Pasminco (now Zinifex Limited) however the site has been cleared since the smelter ceased operations in 2005.
Boolaroo is home to several churches, of mixed denominations, as well as Boolaroo Public School, a library, a cinema (which was partially destroyed in the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake) and a number of shops.
