The current of the incoming tide up a river producing a wall of water which moves upstream. It is linked with the narrowing and shallowing of the river mouth. In Britain, the most famous river bore occurs on the Severn, but the largest bore in the world occurs on the Amazon, where it moves upstream at a rate of 10 m/s reaching a height of 5 m.

1. The inside diameter of a pipe, valve, or other fitting.
2. The circular hole made by boring.

inrush of water that advances upstream with a wavelike front, caused by the progress of incoming tide from a wide-mouthed bay into its narrower portion. The tidal movement tends to be retarded by friction as it reaches the shallower water and meets the river current; it therefore piles up and forms a low wall of water that moves upstream with considerable force and velocity as the tide continues to rise. In the mouth of the Amazon River a tidal bore known locally as the pororoca occurs every spring tide. It has a wall of water from 5 to 15 ft (1.5–4.6 m) high and advances at a speed of from 10 to 15 mi (16–24 km) per hr. The highest recorded bore (15 ft/4.6 m) is found in the Fuchun River near Hangzhou, China. Bores are found also in the Bay of Fundy, in Solway Firth, in the Severn, Seine, and Hugli rivers, and in Hangzhou Bay.

pronunciation

IN BRIEF: A dull and uninteresting person.

pronunciation Everyone is a bore to someone. That is unimportant. The thing to avoid is being a bore to oneself. — Gerald Brenan; English writer

Tutor's tip: The "Boer" (South African of Dutch descent) was not a "boor" (rude or crude person), but he said that the "boar" (male pig) was a "bore" (uninteresting or tiresome).

"Bore" may also be used as a synonym for:

  • The action of boring out a hole
  • A borehole, as in an oil well or water well
  • The tool creating this hole, i.e. a drill bit, especially in precision work
  • The inner diameter of a pipe or tube
  • The caliber of a gun; as a measurement it is generally used to refer to smoothbore guns such as shotguns and muskets and is generally used as equivalent to gauge which is the number of balls per pound of lead, later expressed in inches or millimeters; this use is generally archaic, though still used in British English and the sport of paintball where smoothbore barrels are standard. The exception is the .410 bore, which is .410 inches.
  • A person who is boring
