(bPlovdiv, 18 May 1914; d Rome, 28 June 1993). Bulgarian bass. He studied at Rome and Salzburg. He made his Covent Garden début in 1949 and sang in the USA from 1956 (début at San Francisco, as Boris). His powerful stage presence and well-projected voice contributed to his international identification with the roles of Boris Godunov and Verdi's Philip II. He was also a fine recitalist.
