Biography

After disbanding Guided by Voices late in 2004, the ever prolific and busy Robert Pollard worked on solo projects, set up his own Guided by Voices label, and nursed a few GBV odds and ends through the pipeline before starting a new band, Boston Spaceships, with Chris Slusarenko (the Takeovers, Sprinkler) and John Moen (the Decemberists, the Dharma Bums). Working Pollard's familiar but skewed take on past garage and pop styles, Boston Spaceships released Brown Submarine in 2008 and Planets Are Blasted and Zero to 99 in 2009, all on Pollard's Guided by Voices imprint. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

History

2008: Beginnings

In June 2008 Pollard announced he had formed a new recording project, Boston Spaceships. While it is not unlikely for Pollard to have a new recording project, Pollard's confidence in the band led to a seventeen date fall tour that began in late September. On the band's first tour Pollard, Moen and Slusarenko were joined by longtime Pollard collaborators Tommy Keene and Jason Narducy.

The band's first album Brown Submarine was released in September and received good reviews, scoring the highest score for a Pollard release on metacritic since GBV's Earthquake Glue five years prior [1]. The album was named the 12th best album of 2008 by Magnet Magazine [2]. The band released two 7 inch LPs, Headache Revolution and You Satisfy Me to round out the year.

2009

The band released their second album The Planets are Blasted in February 2009. The album featured guest appearances by Greg Demos (GBV 1990-99), Gary Jarman (The Cribs) and Chris Funk (The Decemberists).

The band released their third album Zero To 99 in October 2009.
