Boyd Payne Gaines (born May 11, 1953) is an American stage, film, and television actor. He has received four Tony Awards for his work:

Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play - The Heidi Chronicles, 1989
Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical - She Loves Me, 1994
Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical - Contact, 2000
Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical - Gypsy: A Musical Fable, 2008

He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play in 2007, for Journey's End, making him the first actor to be nominated in each of the four Tony categories that a man can be eligible for. In 2009, Raúl Esparza became the second actor to achieve this feat, though he has yet to win a Tony.

Gaines was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Ida and James Gaines. He has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Fame, L.A. Law and Law & Order, but perhaps he is best known for playing a dental student and dentist Mark Royer, who married Valerie Bertinelli's Barbara Cooper on One Day at a Time. Gaines is a voice-actor, and is credited with recording several audiobooks.
