Brí Léith

Celtic Mythology: Brí Léith

[Irish brí, hill]

A hill, sídh, or otherworldly residence, and route to the Otherworld, identified with the modern Ardagh Hill, 3 miles SW of Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford. Brí Léith was the residence of Midir. Angus Óg is sometimes described as being fostered here. In Tochmarc Étaíne [The Wooing of Étaín] the men of Eochaid Airem want to destroy the hill in their search for the missing Étaín. Celebrations of Lughnasa were held here until recent times.
