A genus of the grass family Poaceae; contain steroidal saponins; manifested clinically by photosensitization. Includes B. brizantha (signal grass, St. Lucia grass), B. decumbens (signal grass), B. humidicola (Koronivia grass), B. radicans (tanner grass), B. ruziziensis. Unidentified species (called also Brazilian tanner grass) may cause nitrite poisoning.
- B. mutica — the grass is not normally poisonous but may contain enough oxalate to cause osteodystrophy fibrosa in horses at pasture. Called also para grass.
