The Tennessee-born newspaperman's collection of Old and New Testament stories reinterpreted in the context of Southern black life and folklore would be adapted by Marc Connelly in The Green Pastures (1930). A sequel, Ol' King David an' the Philistine Boys, would appear in 1930, followed in 1931 by a collection, John Henry, about the legendary black hero. |
