Review

On Brainwreck, Steve Westfield joined with the Burnouts to create a lively album of inventive hard rock. The disc starts off with a spoken-word introduction and then quickly dives into the punky "Brainwreck." The scorching guitars continue on "You Make It So Hard (To Go)," as Westfield and friends continue on a disc startlingly harder than Westfield's solo work. On "Smoked a Little Too Much Monkey Brain Last Night," the intricate guitar at the beginning gives way to more hard rock and Westfield's vocal exercises. The song includes cello by Rich Cortese and pedal steel guitar by Rich Gilbert. Things finally slow down on "Bent and Melted Next to Paul Westerberg," an ode to the singer of the Replacements. The jazzy organ lays the foundation, while Westfield returns to his calm and folky vocal approach. The disc closes with a live rendition of "Electrocute Me," which originally appeared on 1994's Mangled album. Overall, this EP is dramatically different than Westfield's powerful solo work. ~ Stephen Cramer, All Music Guide
