Brandenburg (1) The Mark Brandenburg formed the nucleus from which Prussia grew and was from 1915 to 1945 a Provinz of Prussia. In the DDR it was a Land until the Länder were abolished in 1952. After the unification of Germany Brandenburg became one of the country's constituent states (see Bundesrepublik Deutschland). The Mark has inspired poets, including P. Huchel, but it is best known through the works of Th. Fontane. Other writers include G. de Bruyn and H. Scholtz.
