Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School (BJPS) is a private, interfaith college preparatory school founded by the Jesuits, located on the northwest side of Indianapolis. It is located within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
Brebeuf was opened in 1962 and was named in honor of St. Jean de Brébeuf, a 17th century North American Jesuit martyr. The school was initially limited to male students, but in 1976, became coeducational.
Mission statement
"The mission of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, which is Jesuit, Catholic and Interfaith, is to provide an excellent college preparatory education by preparing its students for a lifetime of leadership in service to others as men and women who are intellectually competent, open to growth, loving, religious, and committed to promoting justice. In pursuit of this mission, Brebeuf Jesuit affirms two essential principles: the education of the whole person and the care of the person.[1]"
"The Grad at Grad"
In order to accomplish the goals described in the mission statement... it is helpful to list a brief description of each of the five characteristics [that] Brebeuf Jesuit hopes to develop in its graduates:[2]
Intellectually competent
The Brebeuf Jesuit graduate exhibits not only a mastery of the academic requirements for college admission, but he or she has also developed analytical skills and intellectual abilities that go beyond the academic requirements for advanced education. The graduate has begun to think independently and critically, and he or she applies this intellectual ability in his or her personal quest for religious truth and in his or her response to issues of social justice.
Open to growth
The Brebeuf Jesuit graduate has matured --emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically, and religiously-- to a level that reflects personal responsibility for his or her own growth. The graduate is beginning to reach out in his or her development, seeking opportunities to stretch his or her mind and imagination, his or her feelings and religious consciousness. There is a willingness to encounter, appreciate, and learn from people of diverse backgrounds and experiences. There is recognition that learning is a lifelong endeavor.
Loving
The Brebeuf Jesuit graduate is well on his or her way to recognizing and accepting his or her self-worth. The graduate is moving beyond self-interest or self-centeredness in relationships with others. He or she is beginning to risk some deeper levels of relationship in which he or she can disclose self, accept the mystery of other persons, and love them.
Religious
Brebeuf Jesuit is a Jesuit, Catholic educational ministry that has a commitment to being Interfaith through ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue. In this rich educational environment, the Brebeuf Jesuit graduate has begun to explore his or her personal religious experience, has started to integrate more fully into his or her own religious community, has engaged in the study of and dialogue with the religious traditions of others, and is striving to embody his or her faith in the service of justice as a man or woman for others.
Committed to justice
The Brebeuf Jesuit graduate has developed broad knowledge and understanding of the many needs of local and wider communities, and is preparing for the day when he or she will take a place in these communities as a competent, concerned, and responsible member predisposed to justice. The graduate has begun to acquire the skills and motivation necessary to live as a man or woman for others; one whose commitment to doing justice will come to fruition in mature adulthood.
Students
Approximately 800 students are enrolled in grades 9 through 12, drawn from over 40 private and public schools in the greater Indianapolis area. Of the students that apply to attend Brebeuf, only 35 percent are accepted. In order to be eligible to apply to Brebeuf, students must take the STS High School Placement Test and place above the 60th percentile, which was lowered in 2004 from the 70th percentile.
Brebeuf is considered an "interfaith" school. Approximately half of Brebeuf students are Roman Catholic. However, Brebeuf also is home to surprisingly high numbers of Protestant and Jewish students as well as Buddhist, Muslim, and non-religious considering it is a Roman Catholic, specifically Jesuit, school. Nineteen percent of the student body represents minorities.
Statistics
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School is well known for its academic achievements. It consistently maintains a 98% graduation rate and routinely boasts the highest yearly average SAT scores in the state. The school was ranked the number one school in Indiana in 2005 by Indianapolis Monthly. It was the national champion in high school debate in 2005 and state speech champions for several years including 2001.
The Brebeuf Men's basketball team won the state championship in the 1999-2000 season[5]. In both 2004 and 2007, the Brebeuf Jesuit women's basketball team won the state championship[6]. Also, in 2004, the women's volleyball team came home with the state title. Also in 2004, the hockey team won a state championship. In addition, the women's golf team won this year's state tourney.
