Brett Weston

Weston, Brett (1911-93), American photographer, and second son of Edward Weston, whose pupil he became in 1925. Twenty nature and landscape photographs by him were shown at the Film und Foto (FiFo) exhibition in Stuttgart in 1929. In 1932 the M. H. de Young Museum in San Francisco mounted his first major one-man show. In conjunction with great technical precision, Weston favoured a severe vocabulary of containing lines and monochrome contrasts that transforms his images of landscapes and natural objects into abstract compositions. A lifelong interest in surfaces and textures also governs his abstract-leaning close-ups, which turn everyday objects into pure form.
