Pinkney, Brian (1961– ), American illustrator of children's books, who is committed to exploring African‐American culture in his works. He has collaborated with Robert San Souci in producing the important anthology Cut from the Same Cloth: American Women of Myth, Legend, and Tall Tale (1993) and has also illustrated San Souci's Sukey and the Mermaid (1992). Pinkney uses scratchboard techniques to sculpt stark black‐and‐white images, and he also endows his lines and figures with an unusual rhythm. Pinkney has also provided drawings for Lynn Joseph's A Wave in her Pocket: Stories from Trinidad (1991) and Patricia McKissack's The Dark Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural (1992).
