The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) is the not-for-profit trade association which represents the banks operating within the United Kingdom.
It represents more than 200 banking members from 60 countries, plus a further 60 associated professional firms.
Mission
The BBA’s mission is to promote and protect the interests of the UK’s banks and financial services through:
- Representation of banks and financial services to governments, regulators, European and other international bodies and everyone who influences banks’ business;
- Information clearly and plainly put on the importance of banks to the UK’s economy, society and culture; and
- Collaboration with members to ensure intelligence is shared and best practice promoted.
The BBA’s stated aims are to get the best for members and their customers by using its authority, access and knowledge to:
- anticipate, identify and influence new legal and regulatory initiatives;
- produce authoritative statistics and research;
- ensure its members are fully informed;
- improve public understanding of the banking industry;
- generate discussion and lead thinking on how banking should develop; and
- work to make markets more competitive for everyone.
One of the BBA’s key roles is to operate and maintain BBA LIBOR, the primary benchmark for short term interest rates internationally and one of the fundamental benchmarks for global financial markets.
Structure
The BBA’s honorary chairman is Stephen Green, the chairman of HSBC.
The BBA’s chief executive is Angela Knight CBE, who succeeded Ian Mullen in the role on 1 April 2007. Angela Knight was chief executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers (APCIMS) from 1997 to 2007. She was MP for Erewash from 1992 to 1997 and was a junior minister (Economic Secretary to the Treasury) in John Major’s government.
The deputy chief executive is Sally Scutt, who was appointed from the banking sector in June 1998. Sally Scutt deputises for Angela Knight and is also managing director of the International Banking Federation, which is the representative body for a group of key national banking associations. Its main objective is to increase the effectiveness of the financial services industry’s response to multilateral and national government issues affecting their common interests,
Heading up the policy teams are the executive directors:

The commercial director, Jason Cole, is responsible for BBA Enterprises, the commercial arm of the association which produces leaflets, manuals and other publications for the members and also organises member conferences and seminars.
