Britwell Salome is a village and civil parish in South Oxfordshire, England, about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northeast of Wallingford.

History

"Salome" is derived from the surname Sulham. There is a village called Berrick Salome 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west, and a village called Sulham near Reading, Berkshire.

The Church of England parish church of Saint Nicholas dates from the 13th century. It was restored in 1867 by the architect Charles Buckeridge.^[1] St. Nicholas' parish is now part of the Benefice of Icknield.^[2]

Britwell House was built in 1727-28 for Sir Edward Simeon. The architect is unknown but the oval chapel, added in 1769-69 was designed by Simeon himself.^[1]

Britwell Priory is northeast of the village.

Amenities

The village has a gastropub, The Goose,^[3] that recently^[when?] won a Michelin Star.

Britwell Salome Cricket Club^[4] plays in Oxfordshire Cricket Association League Division Four.^[5]

Southeast of the village is Britwell Hill. The ancient Ridgeway runs past the hill. There is an excellent view of rural Oxfordshire looking down from the very straight road leading from the hill to the village.
