Broad Ripple Village is one of six areas designated as cultural districts in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Located about six miles (11 km) north of Downtown Indianapolis, Broad Ripple contains many of Indianapolis' premier upscale restaurants, art galleries, and the popular Monon Trail. It also has a reputation for being socially, economically and ethnically diverse, and is generally associated with progressive political attitudes. Established in 1837, Broad Ripple was originally an independent municipality. It was annexed to the City of Indianapolis in 1922. It currently hosts an active social scene, fueled by the near presence of Butler University and IUPUI. A large number of private art galleries, nightspots, and independently owned restaurants line the Village's streets. Broad Ripple High School, one of the earliest Indianapolis Public Schools, is located within the Village. In 2004, The Broad Ripple Gazette, a free, bi-weekly newspaper covering local news, was created by Broad Ripple native Alan Hague.[2]
In Broad Ripple Village, there are diverse and unique venues for eating, entertainment and shopping. In local restaurants a wide variety of food is available, including Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Japanese, as well as traditional American fare. For entertainment, there is comedy, sports bars, and three microbreweries. The Village is also home to branches of a number of banks.
Nearby is the former Glendale Shopping Center, which has recently been rebuilt at Glendale Town Center.
Broad Ripple is in the 3rd District of the Indianapolis City-County Council, currently represented by Ryan Vaughn (R).
Some famous Hoosiers raised in or near the Broad Ripple neighborhood include late night talk show hose David Letterman, professional football player Rosevelt Colvin, astronaut David Wolf, and authors Dan Wakefield and Kurt Vonnegut, among others.
